GD - Interface Assembly Test Stand

V I Engineering, Inc., a National Instruments Select Premier Alliance Member, was contracted by General Dynamics Land Systems to replace an automated end-of-line test stand to aid in the critical test requirements for validating transmission interface assembly (IA) units for various military land vehicles. Interface Assemblies are the main control units, which regulate operation of the transmission in military vehicles. There are a maximum of seven different tests that must be performed on each nterface assembly depending on the specific model to verify operational functionality. The software is capable of testing all five different interface assembly units currently produced, which each contain distinct parameters and testing standards depending on the model of IA unit selected.

The system includes a password/login utility for controlling and limiting access to specific functionality of the software, along with identifying current and former users within the report generation. The comprehensive testing includes calculating testing parameters with respect to distinct IA units, executing a maximum of 7 distinct tests, analyzing and data processing of each test, limit checking, printing comprehensive pass/fail reports, and archiving the reports and test data. The software must be capable of running with minimal user intervention and intelligent enough to give user directed instructions for correct operation and testing. Without automated testing, the average manual testing time for one interface assembly unit is approximately 12 hours. Using the automated LabVIEW based testing system, the entire testing sequence can be completed within 45 minutes, a dramatic improvement to the temporary manual testing time.
